Cancer FAQ’s

Esophageal Cancer
1. Will swallowing become more difficult over time?
Some patients may experience difficulty swallowing. Medical and nutrition teams work together to manage symptoms and ensure safe, adequate nutrition.
Breast Cancer
2. If cancer develops in one breast, will it also occur in the other breast?
Not necessarily. While the risk of cancer developing in the other breast may be slightly higher, this depends on individual factors such as genetic mutations or a strong family history. Many people do not go on to develop cancer in both breasts, and care teams monitor risk closely to support early detection and prevention.
3. Is it necessary to remove both breasts if only one is affected?
Removing the unaffected breast is not routinely recommended. This option may be considered in certain situations, such as when there is a high genetic risk or specific medical findings. Decisions are made on an individual basis, with careful discussion between the person and their healthcare team.
4. Do clear scans mean cancer is cured?
Clear imaging results reflect effective treatment at that point in time. Ongoing monitoring is still recommended, as some cancers—particularly those influenced by hormones—may require long-term therapy or surveillance to support lasting health.
5. Is breast cancer always hereditary?
No. Only a small percentage of cases are linked to inherited mutations.
6. Will removing the breast remove all risk forever?
Surgery reduces risk but does not eliminate it entirely. Follow-up care remains important.
7. Does a BRCA mutation mean children will definitely develop cancer?
Having a BRCA gene mutation does not mean that children will definitely develop cancer. Each child has about a 50% chance of inheriting the mutation itself, but inheriting the mutation does not mean cancer will occur. Many people with a BRCA mutation never develop cancer, and genetic counselling can help families understand and manage their risk.
Pancreatic Cancer
8. Why did my symptoms look like a stomach or liver problem at first?
The pancreas is close to other digestive organs, which can cause overlapping symptoms.
9. Can pancreatic cancer cause long-term digestion problems?
Yes. Reduced enzyme production can lead to pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI).
10. Can pancreatic cancer change blood sugar levels?
Yes. Some people develop high blood sugar levels or diabetes around diagnosis.
Cervical Cancer
11. Can cervical cancer be prevented?
Yes. HPV vaccination if taken at the right time and regular screening can reduce the chances of cervical cancer.
12. Does having HPV (Human Papillomavirus) mean cervical cancer will definitely develop?
An HPV infection does not automatically lead to cervical cancer. In most cases, the body clears the virus naturally over time. Regular screening and appropriate follow-up play an important role in identifying changes early and preventing cancer from developing.
Colon Cancer
13. Are polyps always cancerous?
Most polyps are not cancerous, but some can become cancerous over time.
14. How does having a stoma bag change daily life?
Most people adapt and return to normal routines over time.
15. Can people with stoma bags eat normal food?
Yes. Dietary & lifestyle adjustments are usually individualised.
16. Is it possible to travel or exercise with a stoma bag?
Yes. With proper planning, most activities are possible.
17. Will others notice the stoma bag?
Modern stoma bags are discreet and fit under normal clothing.
18. Is long-term support available for people with stomas?
Yes. Ongoing follow-up ensures comfort and quality of life.
Lung Cancer
19. Can lung cancer affect breathing differently in different people?
Yes. Breathing changes depend on lung health, tumour location, and treatment.
