Cancer FAQ’s

Esophageal Cancer
1. Will swallowing become more difficult over time?
Some patients may experience difficulty swallowing. Medical and nutrition teams work together to manage symptoms and ensure safe, adequate nutrition.
Breast Cancer
2. If cancer develops in one breast, will it also occur in the other breast?
Not necessarily. While the risk of cancer developing in the other breast may be slightly higher, this depends on individual factors such as genetic mutations or a strong family history. Many people do not go on to develop cancer in both breasts, and care teams monitor risk closely to support early detection and prevention.
3. Is it necessary to remove both breasts if only one is affected?
Removing the unaffected breast is not routinely recommended. This option may be considered in certain situations, such as when there is a high genetic risk or specific medical findings. Decisions are made on an individual basis, with careful discussion between the person and their healthcare team.
4. Do clear scans mean cancer is cured?
Clear imaging results reflect effective treatment at that point in time. Ongoing monitoring is still recommended, as some cancers—particularly those influenced by hormones—may require long-term therapy or surveillance to support lasting health.
5. Is breast cancer always hereditary?
No. Only a small percentage of cases are linked to inherited mutations.
6. Will removing the breast remove all risk forever?
Surgery reduces risk but does not eliminate it entirely. Follow-up care remains important.
7. Does a BRCA mutation mean children will definitely develop cancer?
Having a BRCA gene mutation does not mean that children will definitely develop cancer. Each child has about a 50% chance of inheriting the mutation itself, but inheriting the mutation does not mean cancer will occur. Many people with a BRCA mutation never develop cancer, and genetic counselling can help families understand and manage their risk.
Pancreatic Cancer
8. Why did my symptoms look like a stomach or liver problem at first?
The pancreas is close to other digestive organs, which can cause overlapping symptoms.
9. Can pancreatic cancer cause long-term digestion problems?
Yes. Reduced enzyme production can lead to pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI).
10. Can pancreatic cancer change blood sugar levels?
Yes. Some people develop high blood sugar levels or diabetes around diagnosis.
Cervical Cancer
11. Can cervical cancer be prevented?
Yes. HPV vaccination if taken at the right time and regular screening can reduce the chances of cervical cancer.
12. Does having HPV (Human Papillomavirus) mean cervical cancer will definitely develop?
An HPV infection does not automatically lead to cervical cancer. In most cases, the body clears the virus naturally over time. Regular screening and appropriate follow-up play an important role in identifying changes early and preventing cancer from developing.
Colon Cancer
13. Are polyps always cancerous?
Most polyps are not cancerous, but some can become cancerous over time.
14. How does having a stoma bag change daily life?
Most people adapt and return to normal routines over time.
15. Can people with stoma bags eat normal food?
Yes. Dietary & lifestyle adjustments are usually individualised.
16. Is it possible to travel or exercise with a stoma bag?
Yes. With proper planning, most activities are possible.
17. Will others notice the stoma bag?
Modern stoma bags are discreet and fit under normal clothing.
18. Is long-term support available for people with stomas?
Yes. Ongoing follow-up ensures comfort and quality of life.
Lung Cancer
19. Can lung cancer affect breathing differently in different people?
Yes. Breathing changes depend on lung health, tumour location, and treatment.
Oral Cancer
20. When should a mouth ulcer be checked?
Most mouth ulcers heal on their own. Ulcers that persist for more than two weeks should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
21. Will oral cancer affect eating or speaking long-term?
Changes in eating or speaking can occur during and after treatment. Many effects are temporary, and function often improves with proper care and support.
Prostate Cancer
22. Can prostate cancer affect urination permanently?
Changes may occur, but many improve over time.
23. Can sexual activity increase the risk of prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer develops due to factors such as age, genetics, and health conditions, not sexual behavior. Understanding the facts can help reduce worry and support informed health decisions.
24. Does an enlarged prostate always mean cancer?
No. Enlargement often occurs due to benign conditions.
Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Liver Cancer)
25. Does every damaged liver lead to liver cancer?
No. Many people live with liver disease without developing cancer.
Blood Cancers and Lymphomas
26. Can blood cancers affect organs other than blood and lymph nodes?
Yes. Organs like the liver or spleen may be affected.
27. Are all blood cancers treated immediately after diagnosis?
No. Some slow-growing cancers may be monitored first.
Most common FAQ’s
28. Is cancer treatable?
Many cancers can be treated. Treatment depends on the type of cancer, where it is in the body, and how early it is found. Care is personalised for each person and may involve different treatment options. Alongside treating the cancer, doctors focus on supporting overall wellbeing and quality of life at every stage.
29. Do lifestyle habits or food choices cause cancer?
Certain lifestyle factors and food choices may affect cancer risk, but cancer is rarely caused by one single factor. Having risk factors does not mean someone is to blame. Many cancers develop without an obvious cause, and every person’s situation is different.
30. Can food and nutrition really make a difference?
Yes. Proper nutrition helps maintain strength, manage swallowing issues, and support the body during treatment and recovery.
31. Should family members also get tested or screened for cancer?
Not everyone needs cancer screening. For some people-especially those with family history or multiple risk factors-medical advice may be helpful. A healthcare professional can explain available options and help decide whether screening is right for them.
32. Is it possible to conceive after cancer treatment?
Many people are able to conceive after cancer treatment, depending on factors such as age, the type of cancer, and the treatments used. Some therapies can affect fertility, either temporarily or permanently. Before treatment begins, fertility preservation options may be considered. These can include freezing eggs, sperm, or embryos, and in some cases preserving ovarian or testicular tissue. A healthcare team or fertility specialist can provide personalised guidance based on individual circumstances and future family plans.
33. Can cancer come back after treatment?
Sometimes cancer can return after treatment, but this is not the case for everyone. The risk varies depending on the type of cancer, how advanced it was, and the treatments used. Regular follow-up care plays an important role in monitoring health and providing reassurance over time.
34. Does stress cause cancer?
Stress is not considered a direct cause of cancer. However, prolonged stress can affect physical and emotional health. Addressing stress and mental wellbeing is an important aspect of overall health and supportive cancer care.
35. How can cancer treatment influence energy, work, and everyday activities?
Cancer treatment can affect energy and stamina, influencing work and daily activities. Many people continue their routines by pacing themselves, prioritising rest, staying gently active with appropriate exercise, and eating a nourishing diet. With guidance from healthcare teams, daily life can often be adjusted to support well-being and recovery.
36. Why can weight loss happen even when eating normally?
Weight loss can sometimes occur during cancer or its treatment, even when food intake has not changed. This may be due to changes in digestion, how the body uses nutrients, or treatment-related side effects that affect appetite or metabolism. Nutrition support and advice from a healthcare team can help manage weight changes and support strength and recovery.
37. Can sexual intimacy be affected after cancer treatment?
Sexual intimacy may change during or after cancer treatment. Physical effects such as dryness, discomfort, fatigue, or hormonal changes, as well as emotional factors, can play a role. These changes are common and often manageable, and support is available to help maintain comfort, confidence, and wellbeing.
38. Can cancer treatment affect menstrual cycles?
Cancer treatment may impact menstrual cycles in different ways, including changes in timing, flow, or the onset of menopause. The effects vary by treatment type and individual factors. Healthcare professionals can provide monitoring, advice, and strategies to support hormonal health and wellbeing.
39. Can cancer develop in younger adults without a family history?
Cancer can affect younger adults even without known risk factors or a family history. Awareness of symptoms, regular health check-ups, and early medical evaluation play a key role in prevention and early detection.
40. Why is early diagnosis important in cancer?
Early detection allows for timely treatment, which is often less complex and more successful. It also helps manage symptoms and supports better recovery and quality of life.
41. How can cancer affect the immune system?
Cancer and its treatment may impact the body’s immune response over time. The degree of effect varies by cancer type, treatment, and individual health. Ongoing support, monitoring, and preventive measures help protect immunity and overall wellbeing.
